چکیده

We have calculated the cross section for n+p --c d +2y. This process depends critically on the same matrix element that gives the amplitude for singly radiative np capture from the continuum 3 S state. It has been suggested that 1’anomalous17 transitions from this continuum 3S state may explain a long-standing discrepancy in np capture ((T =334.2*.5 mb and 0 exp th = 309.5 % 5 mb) by contributing roughly 8% to the total np capture cross section. If this speculation is correct then the branching ratio of doubly to singly radiative np capture is 1.4 x 10 -4 . On the other hand a conventional estimate of this amplitude yields a branching ratio of about 3.4 x 10 -lo. An experimental measurement of the doubly radiative cross section in the 10 pb region should therefore settle the question of the importance of the 3S initial state in the total radiative np capture cross section. Such a measurement seems at present to be much easier than similarly motivated polarization measurements. ?: Supported in part by the National Science Foundation, Grant GP-16565, and in part by the U. Radiative neutron capture on a proton at BBN energies

The total cross section for radiative neutron capture on a proton, np → dγ, is evaluated at big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) energies. The electromagnetic transition amplitudes are calculated up to next-to leading order within the framework of pionless effective field theory with dibaryon fields. We also calculate the dγ → np cross section and the photon analyzing power for the d~γ → np process f...

Single Electron Capture in Slow Collisions of Doubly Charged Ions with Dinuclear Molecules

We have performed translational-spectroscopical measurements on single electron capture (SEC) by impact of slow (impact energy ≤ 1 keV) doubly charged ions on dinuclear molecules. For impact of C and N ions the influence of their metastable fractions on the SEC probability has been studied. For impact of He on O2 and CO direct and dissociative SEC have been investigated. For all collision syste...

Np Cross Section for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

The total cross sections for the radiative neutron capture on a proton, np → dγ, and its inverse reaction dγ → np are evaluated at the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) energies. We employ the effective field theory with dibaryon field to describe the two-nucleon reactions with external electromagnetic probe. Electromagnetic transition amplitudes are obtained up to next-to leading order. Our resul...

Suppressed Amplitudes in np → dγ

The low energy radiative capture process np → dγ provides a sensitive probe of the two-nucleon system. The cross section for this process is dominated by the isovector M1 amplitude for capture from the S0 channel via the isovector magnetic moment of the nucleon. In this work we use effective field theory to compute the isoscalar M1, isoscalar E2 and isovector E1 amplitudes that are strongly sup...
